Welcome Sign

I made this Welcome sign using a birdcage graphic from  The Graphics Fairy, Citrasolv, a fence board that I aged and a piece of metal from Hobby Lobby.

I started with a fence board that my husband glued up.  I sanded it, but not too well.  You will see later that I should've sanded much better to get all of the glue off!

 I lightly applied Citrasolv (purchased at Whole Foods)  with a tissue until the graphic showed through.  I then used the back of a spoon to rub it into the wood.  (I've used Citrasolv on several projects and have found it to adhere most clearly when applying it lightly, then using the back of a spoon to rub it in) 

I rubbed apple cider vinegar on the board with steel wool.  It took two coats to look nice and aged.  You can see my original post about aging wood HERE.   You can see the light spots here where the vinegar would not adhere to the wood due to the glue spots.

I kept trying to sand those spots off, but it just wouldn't work, so what's a girl to do???  Turn the board over and try again!

My husband made a frame for it out of a fence board as well.

I added this metal "Welcome" piece I found at Hobby Lobby, but wanted it black, so painted it first.

I added hooks and wire to the back.

I screwed the Welcome piece onto the front and was done.

My Great-Grandmother's Quilt

I inherited this amazing quilt that my Great-Grandmother made.  I'm guessing she made it in the 1940's, which would make it over 70 years old! (of course that's just my guess--it could've been made in the early 1900's!)  The best part is that it is still in pristine condition.  I can't imagine any of my crafts still being displayed in 70-100 years.

I have it hanging on a ladder in a room in my basement where no light can get on it. 

I am just amazed at the craftsmanship.  Each stitch looks perfect.  I love that the boxes are 3D!   

Here it is laid out on my son's full size bed.  I only put it on his bed to show the whole thing, don't worry about the colors clashing between the walls and the quilt--it doesn't stay on here.  :)

My Mom had this quilt for years, then passed it onto me.  I'm so happy to have it.  Of course, I'll be passing it on to my kids too!

Seeing the Light at a Garage Sale

I found these two very nice and heavy brass lamps at a garage sale last weekend.  I grabbed them quickly when I saw they were $5 for the pair.

My husband took them apart and painted them.  These picture makes it look like they are silver, but they are black.

He then reassembled them.  (sorry, my elementary photo skills make these look silver too!)

We didn't have shades that I was thrilled with and didn't love the ones that were on them when I bought them, so it was off to Target this morning. I got the shades for $15 each.  I'm so happy with the way they turned out and love that they only cost $17.50 per lamp.

Cute Wall Hanging with Burlap and Graphics

Recently I found this yellow frame at a garage sale for $2.  It was missing the glass or mirrors on the sides and one of the dividers wasn't connected, but it was well worth the $2! 

I removed the hooks and spray painted it an Oregano color.  I absolutely love Rust-oleum's 2x paints.  The coverage is so good!

After I painted it, I reattached the divider that had come unattached.

I used one of my favorite graphics from The Graphics Fairy.  I turned it in Picnik and copied it onto a piece of scrapbook paper.

I wrapped burlap around a piece of hardboard and hot glued the back.  I used hot glue to attach this key to one of them.

And this "5" to another.

I bought the key and the "5" at Hobby Lobby.

I then put everything back in the frame, reattached the hooks and hung it up.

I'm really happy with it.

The Last Gasp of Summer

I absolutely love summer weather, gardening, being outside, etc.  It's been in the high 80's here for several weeks now, but they are forecasting 46 degrees and snow in the mountains for tomorrow.  Can I just say NO?!    :)

Most of my perennials have come and gone for the season, so thank goodness for very late blooming Rose of Sharon (you start blooming in late September?  What's up with that?)  and my favorite annual of all--Cosmos!

The warm weather required some serious cooling off!  The screen is there so Max stays on his side and doesn't do any damage to the deeper part of the pond.  The fish love to swim right up to him while he's laying in there.

 

  I'm sure going to miss the good weather!

$5 Garage Sale Transformation

I recently posted about some garage sale finds I bought a couple of weeks ago.  I bought this table for $5.  

I wasn't sure if I was going to make it a chalk paint project or even mod-podge a graphic on it.   While my husband was traveling last week on business, I decided to start sanding it.  What I found was a really nice maple table under all of that ugliness.   

I decided to hand the job over to my husband to stain it.  I think he did a beautiful job.  As for decorating it,  I was able to use a fan I found while shopping when we took our kids to school. (sometimes a girl needs a break from decorating dorm rooms and frat rooms!)   I found the candle holder at Pottery Barn on clearance.  I put a graphic on a 25 cent galvanized can and added a plant to it and the corner is about done.
