Garage Sale Scores--Scale, Birdcage and More

I really found some fun things at the garage sales this weekend--a  great old copper tub, a wooden box, a birdcage, a scale and some drill bits for my husband.

I was thrilled to find this old Wayrite scale.  But....the biggest bummer of the day was that a girl right before me grabbed the cutest rusty old blue scale.  And she paid $3 for it!!  I would've preferred to have not even seen it.  :)  But, I keep telling myself that I have LOTS of scales, so it was not for me this time....  And, this scale that I did find is very fun!

Here it is in the house with some other recent garage sale finds (and a bird feeder from HomeGoods).

This little birdcage caught my eye.  I didn't care for it in black, but figured I could paint it.

Now it's blue/green.

I love this old box!  It's a perfect size to hold lots and lots of magazines.

 My husband is in the process of cleaning up the copper tub.  I will post about it when it's all spiffed up.

My kids just got out of college for summer.  They are on quarters, so they start much later and end much later than a lot of other schools.  I was fortunate that it's late enough in June that the weather was gorgeous, I got to spend time with them,  and spend some time with friends while I was there.  Of course seeing friends means shopping and spending time looking at their beautiful gardens and beautiful homes.  :)

I found some fun things that I loved and could fit on the airplane with me.  I also found some great things that would've required their own seat, so I couldn't get them...

I love Coke memorabilia and have a couple of Coke crates.  I found this one that had the dividers.  I thought about using it to plant flowers in, but then decided to use it as a display case.

I found a few things to put in it, but I'm sure I'll switch things around a bit.  Right now I have it sitting on a bench, but may hang it later.

 I love little oil cans, and this one especially! 

I found this little birdcage.  I'm a sucker for birdcages! 

This bird letter sorter is perfect for my desk.

And the best part was spending time in my friend, Heather's GORGEOUS backyard!!  She is so amazingly talented!

A bird cage out of chicken wire?  Absolutely perfect!!

Look at these tags!  I love the intricate cuts on the ones on the right and the size and graphics of the ones on the left.

 

 I love it on a shelf in my dining room.

Recent Fun Finds

Since I started working full time at the beginning of the year, my shopping/blogging/redecorating time has been cut significantly...  I was off the other day  and was able to hit a few of my favorite stores and even had some time to peruse ebay.  

I found a couple of old scales.

 

I found this cupcake stand and cloche and think the bird looks cute in there.

 These seed packets are so colorful.

I plan to put some chalkboard stickers on these canisters.  I think they'll look really cute.

An Adorable Town and a Winner!

Last week my husband's step-mother passed away.  We quickly flew to Illinois to be with his family.  On the first day, we had a little extra time before everyone got off work, so we spent some time in the cutest little town, Geneva.  I learned about this place from Jennifer Rizzo's blog.  (whom I might add is one of the nicest bloggers out there!) :)   Even though my husband isn't totally thrilled with shopping in cute stores, he was a trooper. 

 I loved this bike in the middle of a planter!

 

 I didn't get a great picture of this statue, but it's right at the end of the main street and is so cute!

 The businesses all look like this.

 This was such a neat wine store!

 

This was my favorite place!  I love the magnets on the door announcing that they are open.

 

The store was FULL of great things!  And they had a couch for my husband to sit on.  :)

 I love this ottoman!

 

 And this canvas print.

 Because we were traveling and had very limited space, I only bought this little bird, but am so thrilled with it!

Welcome Sign

I made this Welcome sign using a birdcage graphic from  The Graphics Fairy, Citrasolv, a fence board that I aged and a piece of metal from Hobby Lobby.

I started with a fence board that my husband glued up.  I sanded it, but not too well.  You will see later that I should've sanded much better to get all of the glue off!

 I lightly applied Citrasolv (purchased at Whole Foods)  with a tissue until the graphic showed through.  I then used the back of a spoon to rub it into the wood.  (I've used Citrasolv on several projects and have found it to adhere most clearly when applying it lightly, then using the back of a spoon to rub it in) 

I rubbed apple cider vinegar on the board with steel wool.  It took two coats to look nice and aged.  You can see my original post about aging wood HERE.   You can see the light spots here where the vinegar would not adhere to the wood due to the glue spots.

I kept trying to sand those spots off, but it just wouldn't work, so what's a girl to do???  Turn the board over and try again!

My husband made a frame for it out of a fence board as well.

I added this metal "Welcome" piece I found at Hobby Lobby, but wanted it black, so painted it first.

I added hooks and wire to the back.

I screwed the Welcome piece onto the front and was done.
