Pallet Wood and Dishtowel Wall Art

 

 

 

Recently we went to Portland, Oregon for a family wedding.  Because Monticello Antique Marketplace is very close to the airport, it's our first stop when we arrive in town.  We were lucky enough to get there during their Fall Show, which is always filled to the brim with great treasures!

 

One of the things I found was this great dishtowel.  I knew I wouldn't be using it as a dishtowel since the graphics were so cute.

 

 

We decided to make a frame for it using pallet wood.  It took two pallet boards to make the frame.

 

 

 

 

 

 I used my handy-dandy wood aging technique on the  inside edges where the cut marks were, so that they'd look old too.  (if you don't want to click the link, the secret is Apple Cider Vinegar and Steel wool) 

 

 

 

He cut a piece of hardboard to attach the dishtowel to.  We used spray adhesive on the board, then used a rolling pin to attach the dishtowel to the board.  We then put that in the frame, used  glazing points to hold it in, added some tape around the edges, and a wire stapled across the back to hang it.

 

 

The dishtowel was $8.  We had everything else on hand, so I'd say $8 for a neat piece of art is worth it!  :)

Recently I found this yellow frame at a garage sale for $2.  It was missing the glass or mirrors on the sides and one of the dividers wasn't connected, but it was well worth the $2! 

I removed the hooks and spray painted it an Oregano color.  I absolutely love Rust-oleum's 2x paints.  The coverage is so good!

After I painted it, I reattached the divider that had come unattached.

I used one of my favorite graphics from The Graphics Fairy.  I turned it in Picnik and copied it onto a piece of scrapbook paper.

I wrapped burlap around a piece of hardboard and hot glued the back.  I used hot glue to attach this key to one of them.

And this "5" to another.

I bought the key and the "5" at Hobby Lobby.

I then put everything back in the frame, reattached the hooks and hung it up.

I'm really happy with it.

The Writing's on the Wall

I made a very simple piece of wall art the other day.  I started with a typewriter graphic from The Graphics Fairy.  I collect old typewriters, and was so happy to find a graphic that looked almost exactly like this one.

I flipped the image in Picasa by clicking Ctrl/Shift/H.  This gives you the mirror image for iron-on transfers.

I copied the image onto Transfer paper in my inkjet printer. I cut it out very close to the edges of the printing.

I ironed it on.  By ironing onto the burlap, the image did not come out as dark as I would've hoped.  I know I could've used a different fabric to get a darker picture, but I think the burlap is neat.

I added some batting then the burlap.

I pulled the burlap tight and hot glued it to the back.

I then set it in the frame and it was done. It was such an easy and inexpensive project.  

I had all of the supplies onhand, so that made it especially inexpensive.  :)
