More Fun and Games for the Game Room

I love antique shows and flea markets, especially during the winter when there aren't any garage sales going on.

Recently I found a Chinese Checkers board at a flea market.  It didn't come with any of the marbles, but good ol' Amazon had someone selling a complete set for $5. 

I wanted to display the board on the wall of my Game Room, so used Tacky Glue and a toothpick and filled each hole.  I set each marble in and let them dry.  Instantly I had colorful artwork for the wall!

 

 

 

 

Recently, I found this old bank and a jar of marbles.  The bank works by collecting nickels, dimes and quarters.  When the value in the bank reaches $10, you can open it.  Yes, we now put our change in each evening.  My husband knew exactly how it worked, as he'd had one of these growing up.

 

 

I love the colorful jar of marbles.  It came with a new lid, so I just changed it out to an old zinc lid and love the new look!

Picture This!

I have loved old cameras for a long time, but never came across any for sale--until recently.

 

 

 

I was in a local shop a few weeks ago and found this one.  It came with a leather case, flash, etc.  Very fun! And it's in great shape.

 

 

 

As collections get started, you just need one, then the floodgates seem to open.  :)  I was on our local Craigslist the other day and someone was selling two old cameras.  He was very apologetic that he didn't think either of these were still in working condition.  (I wasn't expecting them to be) 

 

He thought this one was from the early 1900's.  I love that it is pretty ragged looking, but still has so many great characteristics.

He thought this one was from the 1950's.  It does close up nicely, but I plan to leave it open.

I love the little tabs that come out of the bottom to straighten them out.  I assume it was to keep the camera steady, but I'm more concerned about displaying them.  :)

Ok, now I've got a collection!  My husband is thrilled!  haha.

Apothecary Collection

I was so happy to see this teeny-tiny apothecary jar on eBay a few weeks ago. I was even happier when I was the lucky winner!

 

 

 

 I have several and really wanted this size.  I'd seen a similar one at the Portland Expo a few years ago.  They wanted $1500 for it.  Hmmmm.... just a little out of my price range!  :)

 

 

 

My parents collected apothecary jars and had an amazing collection.  That was until the 1971 Northridge earthquake when we were living in Northridge... I believe they lost hundreds of jars.  Luckily all of our family was safe, but it was horrible to see a room full of glass that morning!

 

A few years ago, I started collecting jars from eBay and at antique shows.  When my Mom passed away, I received her HUGE Dakota jar, which I cherish!

 

 

 

Look at the difference in size between these two! 

 

 I'm just amazed that these beauties have survived almost 100 years! 

 

I believe this little one that I just purchased was originally a "Salesman Sample" jar.  I guess it was easier to carry around this little one and take orders for the bigger ones.

 

I've seen collections of these at Disneyland and at Lagoon Amusement park here in Utah.  I love how fun and colorful the candy inside can be.

I'm OK with this type of Scale

In honor of my Mom's birthday today, I wanted to show a collection that was inspired by her.  (But first, here's a picture of her along with me and my husband from a few years ago)  :)

When we were growing up, she had all sorts of great antiques, especially old scales.  She and I were shopping at the Portland Expo a few years ago and she found this one.  She was so excited to have found it in such good shape.

The couple she bought it from were so nice!  They invited us to their house later that night to see their extensive collection of scales, coke machines, general store memorabilia, etc.  It was the most fun ever!!  Not long after this trip, my Mom was diagnosed with cancer.  Eight months later, she lost her battle.  My Dad gave me this scale right after she died.  It absolutely means the world to me.  Every time I look at it, I remember how happy she was to find it and how much fun we had looking at the couple's collections!

I had been collecting my own scales via ebay, the Portland Expo, antique shows, etc.  Here are a few others that I love.

These are all fun as they are so tiny.  I'm always excited when I find them at antique shows. 

Most of my scales are candy or general store type scales, but some are scientific and postal scales.  The scientific scale on the middle shelf here was one of the first ones I bought.  I love the milk glass trays.

The burgundy Toledo scale is another of my Mom's that my Dad gave me.  Love, love, love it too!
