Adding the Finishing Touch to the Laundry Room--A Sliding Barn Door

 

The laundry room project is now officially done with the addition of the barn door! 

 

 

 

 

The old laundry room had a door that swung in (and took up a lot of room!)  Our friend wanted a custom door on a barn door slider. 

 

 

 

 

 

My husband got to work.  She lives in a 100+ year old house and wants the old style doors throughout. 

 

 

 

 

 

He made this door and left the opening for glass.  She chose seeded glass which adds some privacy.

 

We installed the barn door hardware purchased from Amazon. 

 

 

 

 This was my first attempt of a vinyl cutout with my new Cricut machine.  I think it turned out pretty snazzy!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The new door keeps the sounds from the washer and dryer down and looks fab! 

Here's her redone laundry room.  It really turned out great!

We CLEANED UP in this Laundry Room Redo!

 

 

We recently completed another project for our friend.  She wanted to redo her laundry room.  Yes, it was in serious need of a redo!

 

 

 

Here is what we started with: 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We pulled everything out and took the washer and dryer off their pedestals.  We made platforms for them to sit on, then added moulding around the edges.  We attached the moulding with Velcro.  It pops off and the washer and dryer can easily be brought down from the pedestals.  We also added pads to the bottom of the pedestals so they can slide out to access everything.

 

 

While we were halfway through the project, her washer died. What timing!  :(

 

We added beadboard, dark grey paint and chair railing to the walls, a new light fixture and new dark flooring.

 

 

A new cabinet and shelves up above keep the supplies hidden and provide a place for some cute accessories.

 

 

 

A plain door from Home Depot was cut and painted to provide a place to fold and set clothes.

 

I think it turned out SO cute!

An Old Washboard for the Laundry Room

I love old washboards and was so happy to find one on our local Craigslist last week.

 

 

This one has great graphics and the glass is in perfect condition.  What better place for it than the laundry room.

 

 

I made these "Mod podged with Graphics Fairy labels" laundry detergent bottles a couple of years ago  HERE.

 

I collect scales and was going to redo the one on the end, then decided I kind of like it in here, especially with the rusty pointer.

 

 

  I filled some blue canning jars with old clothespins, clips and spools of thread.  The chicken wire basket holds dusting and mopping cloths.

 

 

 

Last summer I found this copper washtub.  We use it in here for dirty towels. 

 

 

Thank goodness I have a modern washer and dryer.  I can't imagine the work that was involved in  doing laundry back in the day!

Copper Pot Spiffed Up

Last weekend when I was out garage-saling, I found this copper tub.  I paid $10 for it.  To say I was excited is a little bit of an understatement.  :)

My husband started to clean it up.  Now, I'm torn here.  I LOVED the patina, but it was really dirty and I did want to use it in the house...  So I'm sure some of you will think we are completely crazy, but we cleaned it up. 

I used Bar Keepers Friend and a blue scrubby.  In the cracks and dents I used a toothbrush with Bar Keepers Friend sprinkled on it.

After it was all clean, I used a microfiber cloth and put Brasso on it.



Now I have a place in my laundry room for dirty towels.  I used to have an Ikea laundry basket, and like this 100% better!! 



I did not get to the lid yet.  It is made out of steel, so will now look quite different than the tub.

I may move it to the family room and put blankets in it.  Right now I'm loving it here.

Goodbye Ugly Tide Container, Hello Pretty Bottle

My Tide and Clorox bottles are big (and ugly)!  They sit on a shelf above the washer and dryer, and lifting those huge bottles for every load of wash gets old.

I was in Ikea not long ago and found these cute bottles.  (sorry, I don't have a true 'before' picture--I was using them in all of their plain-ness for awhile)  I think I paid $4 each for them.

On one of my many visits to The Graphics Fairy, I came across these beauties:

Now, I realize they really say something different than Tide and Clorox in French, but I'm going with them!

I used Mod Podge and applied the labels.  I let them dry a bit, then put another coat on and they were done.

I must say, I think they look great and they are so much lighter to lift!  What a simple project this was!

Room to Move in the Laundry Room

Our laundry room has more going on in it than just about any other room in the house!  Of course, laundry is done.  The dog and cat are both fed in here.  We have cleaning supplies, household supplies, planting supplies, etc. in here. It's a decent size room, but with all that's going on in there, it gets crowded!  So the other day my husband removed the door.  It was the best move ever!  We didn't ever close the door because the dog's stuff was on the floor.  I was afraid I'd conk myself in the head when I was reaching for the dog's food or his leash.  Even though we only gained a couple of square feet, it is heavenly!  I can now get past the dog when he's eating and  I can move in there without bumping into something!

We bought our washer and dryer separately, so that's why they don't 'match', which is fine with us.  It's nice having the washer on the pedestal, because then I don't have to bend over to get the clothes out.  I didn't get the pedestal for the dryer because I like having a spot to fold clothes.

I realize this is a really small looking change, but it's a huge improvement for an area that I'm in so many times a day.  If we ever want the door back on, it's as easy as putting it back up.
