New Life Breathed into Old Guest Room

 

 

 

Yes!  I'm back.  :)  I had a crazy-busy summer and am now excited to be back to blogging.  Recently my friend asked me to help her with the guest room in her 100 year old house.  First, she wanted an old iron headboard.  I was at a garage sale and found this one.  I'm guessing that it was originally the foot board, as it wasn't too tall, but she added some pipes to it to raise it to a great height. 

 

 

The headboard did have a great patina of rust, but this is a guest room that her grandkids will be sleeping in, so the rusty patina had to be cleaned up.  We got my husband to clean it up completely using a wire brush attachment on his drill.  We then primed it,  painted it white, then dabbed on a brown stain to age it.

 

 

 

 

Next, she needed a bedside table.  Back to recruiting my husband.  He built this one the exact dimensions that she needed for a small space.

 

 

She wanted a pop of yellow in the room, so chose this color.

 

 

 

 

She found the table at HomeGoods and the slipper chair at SteinMart.  The duvet and the rest of the bedding are from Pottery Barn and Pier1.

 Several months ago, she found this picture of a piece of numbered artwork in the Pottery Barn catalog.

 Not long after that,

I was at Pick Your Plum (love that place!!) and found a bunch of metal numbers in a dollar bin.  I knew they needed to come home with me!

I found an old frame at a garage sale and besides reinforcing the corners, I didn't really do anything with it.  I loved the aged look of it.

 

I painted a piece of hardboard a bright white, then used epoxy glue to attach the numbers to the board.  But, once it was up, it was too stark, so back down it came and some stain was rubbed over the whole thing to age it.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Now she has a room that works for her grandkids as well as anyone else who visits.  I think it turned out so cute!

Flour and Rice Sack Pillows

 

 

 

I found a couple of colorful flour and rice bags at garage sales last year.  I think I paid $1 each for them.  I finally broke down and bought a new sewing machine the other day, so today I made pillows out of them.  It was super easy and a fun way to add some color to my rooms.

 

Here's what I started with.

 

 

I cut them down a bit to get as much of the graphics as possible while keeping them a good size for pillows.  With the rice bag, I put in a Pottery Barn insert and it fit perfectly.

 

With the Turkey Flour (???)  What the heck is Turkey Flour anyway?  :)  With the Turkey (Brand)  Flour bag, I used batting and filled it.

 

Now I've got a couple new neat pillows for very little money.  My kind of decorating!  :)

Pottery Barn Museum Flag Knock Off

When I received the latest Pottery Barn catalog, I noticed this neat looking wooden flag.  Very nice and $159!  Hmmm, that looks like something we could make...

We started with some plywood, pine and fence boards. 

 

 

I painted the structure with Americana Buttermilk, then added a brown antiquing gel that I rubbed off.  I used Midnight Blue under the stars and watered down Tomato Red for the stripes. 

 



I found this stencil at Michael's and used it for the stars.

 

 

I used this hammer to beat up the stripes.

We used a biscuit joiner to attach the pole. 

 



We used this old doorknob as the finial.

I'm loving how it looks in the family room.

 

And especially love the $10 that it cost to make!

This Guest Room is for the Birds

 

 

I recently updated the bedding in our guest room.  I've been admiring the Sparrow duvet and shams at Pottery Barn for some time.  Last week they had them on sale, so I splurged.

My husband made the picket fence headboard about 20 years ago.  I still love it!

 

The bedding I replaced was ok, but needed an update.

 

 

 



I'm on the lookout for another little pillow for the bed.

 

 

I found this little green pillow at Pier 1 yesterday.  I think I like it!

 



 

We found this bird lamp a few months ago.  I really like the rectangular shape.

 

This is one of my Mom's creations.  I love this little footstool, but can't really imagine putting my feet on it.  :)

 

Now I just have to keep the cat off the bed...
